FG dedicated to developing sustainable air transport with satellite technology – Minister

The federal government is dedicated to advancing environmentally friendly aviation by making strategic use of satellite technology.

This was announced on Monday in Abuja during the opening of the 28th Meeting of the African-Indian Ocean (AFI) Satellite Network Management Committee (SNMC) by Mr. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Technology.

Keyamo claims that some solutions offered by satellite technology can greatly improve the country’s aviation industry, from bettering weather forecasting to enhancing air traffic control systems.

  • “We can improve efficiency, and safety, and open up new opportunities for growth and success by utilizing these capabilities. I am profoundly grateful for the revolutionary potential of satellite technology as I stand in front of you.”
  • “Satellite networks are the backbone of modern aviation, enabling safer, more efficient, and more sustainable air travel in an increasingly interconnected world.”
  • “The Federal Government of Nigeria has established priority sectors for national transformation. Better livelihood, economic results, utilizing human resources, and more equitable and secure playing fields are the main goals of these priority areas,” according to Keyamo.

Keyamo underlined how important satellite technology is to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry, intending to build a system that is sustainable, effective, and safe.

Keyamo underlined that the Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Automation initiative depends heavily on satellite technology.

He clarified that the initiative uses the Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS) network to improve Air Traffic Management systems’ operating efficiency and communication by a large margin.

The Aviation Ministry’s broad aims of modernizing airports, constructing a comprehensive safety infrastructure, luring private investment, developing competent personnel, and boosting research and development in the field are all dependent on satellite technology, he stressed.

Additionally, he disclosed that Nigeria is upgrading its multiplexers to NETPERFORMER technology in compliance with international standards, as mandated by the resolutions of the 27th SNMC meeting in Accra in 2019.

All of these programs are meant to maximize the aviation industry’s contribution to improving security and the country’s economy.

The Minister of Aviation emphasized the committee’s vital role in advancing the advancement and application of satellite technology in the aviation sector and guaranteeing the effective and safe administration of satellite networks in the area.

In order to improve the capabilities of the African Flight Information System Network, Keyamo underlined the significance of ongoing committee member participation (AFISNET). He pushed the group to create network topologies and concepts that satisfy the operational requirements of Air Traffic Management (ATM) to fully realize the promise of AFISNET.

He also emphasized how important it is to keep AFISNET’s activities operating under the plans for Air Traffic Management (ATM), Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI).

To enhance information sharing and operational efficiency, he emphasized the importance of resolving spectrum management difficulties and interference, promoting international cooperation, and choosing the network’s service types and levels.

The Satellite Network Management Committee (SNMC) is attributed by Farouk Umar, Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), for improving air traffic control in the Africa-Indian Ocean (AFI) areas.

He mentioned how advancements in safety regulations, stakeholder cooperation, and navigation techniques have improved situational awareness, lowered operating costs, and increased operational efficiency.
