FG Begins Bulk Purchase of Medicines to Boost Healthcare Access

The Federal Government is taking steps to improve access to essential medicines by introducing a system of bulk procurement for public healthcare facilities.

This initiative, unveiled during the Universal Health Coverage Day event in Abuja, aims to ensure that critical medications are both affordable and readily available for Nigerians.

The plan is part of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, launched to address healthcare affordability and reduce the financial strain on citizens.

Alongside this, efforts are being made to boost local production of pharmaceuticals, which is expected to lower costs over time.

In response to rising living costs, the government is prioritizing strategies to shift healthcare expenses away from individuals.

The initiative includes expanding health insurance coverage and offering targeted support for vulnerable groups.

Significant funding has already been secured, including $2.178 billion in external financing, to bolster healthcare investments between 2024 and 2026.

Additionally, the administration is focusing on improving healthcare infrastructure, providing specialized treatments, and aligning state-level health priorities through coordinated annual operational plans.

This approach is designed to create a sustainable health system that delivers equitable care to all Nigerians.
