FG Approves 40% Peculiar Allowance Increase for Civil Servants

—

The Federal Government has approved a 40 percent increase in peculiar allowances for civil servants as part of efforts to improve workers’ welfare and enhance productivity across the public service.

The approval, according to official policy disclosures, affects workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), covering both junior and senior officers in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The allowance adjustment forms part of a broader review of public service benefits, with the government also revising Duty Tour Allowance (DTA), estacode, and book allowances to reflect current economic realities and rising living costs.

Officials, including the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, said the reform is aimed at increasing take-home pay, improving staff welfare, and strengthening efficiency across the civil service.

The government noted that the revised structure is expected to ensure fairness and uniform implementation across all grade levels, enabling both junior and senior officers to benefit from the enhanced package.

While many workers have welcomed the development as a positive step toward boosting morale, policy analysts stressed that effective implementation across MDAs would determine the policy’s overall impact on civil servants nationwide.

The move comes amid broader federal efforts to reform public sector compensation and address longstanding welfare concerns within Nigeria’s civil service.
