The Sunday clash between Feyenoord and Ajax in the Dutch top-flight league has been postponed due to a police strike in the Netherlands.
The tie between the two most successful clubs in the league, known as “De Klassieker,” will be rescheduled to a new date.
Last September, De Klassieker was stopped after it was disrupted by Ajax fans, who, playing at home, began throwing fireworks at the Feyenoord players who had taken a 3-0 lead.
The game was halted at 56 minutes and was concluded three days later behind closed doors.
To avoid a similar situation, the Dutch FA has swiftly decided to postpone the game, as security will be limited.
The city’s mayor, Ahmed Aboutaleb, stated, “The safety of the players, but also of the public, cannot be sufficiently guaranteed without the use of the police.”
Ajax, acknowledging the match postponement, wrote:
“The Klassieker, which was scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 14:30, has been canceled. This decision was made by the Municipality of Rotterdam due to the announced police action, which would result in no police presence at the match in Rotterdam.
Ajax acknowledging the postponement wrote:
“The police action was announced on Monday and revolves around the preservation of early retirement. It is not yet known when the match against Feyenoord will be rescheduled.”
While Feyenoord did with a simple phrase of “No Classic”.
The Eredivisie season has commenced with three games already played. Ajax is currently topping the table following three wins from three, while Feyenoord has won one game and drawn two.
