FENRAD demands Umahi’s Suspension, independent probe over death of Physiotherapist

The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD Nigeria) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, pending the outcome of an independent investigation into the death of a young physiotherapist, Mary Habila, at the minister’s country residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

In the morning of June 26, 2026, Mary Habila was found dead in her room in the minister’s palatial residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State.

Umahi had denied having anything to do with the death, despite different narratives peddled across social media accusing the Minister of having a hand in the unfortunate incident.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, the human rights organisation described Habila’s death as tragic and controversial, saying the circumstances surrounding the incident have generated serious public concern.

FENRAD said several questions remain unanswered, including the circumstances that led to the deceased’s presence at the minister’s residence, reports that physiotherapists from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences were seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works, the nature of their assignments, and the need for a comprehensive forensic investigation, including an independent autopsy.

“These issues require credible answers through a lawful and transparent investigation rather than speculation. Only an independent, evidence-based investigation can establish the facts surrounding the incident and restore public confidence,” the group stressed.

While emphasizing that every individual is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the group maintained that no public official should be shielded from legitimate public scrutiny where serious questions arise.

It argued that suspending the Minister of Works during the investigation would not amount to a declaration of guilt but would demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the integrity of the investigative process.

FENRAD also demanded the immediate establishment of an independent investigative panel comprising representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association, credible civil society organisations, forensic experts, and other relevant professional bodies.

The group further called for a comprehensive forensic investigation, including an independent autopsy and other scientific examinations in line with international best practices.

It also urged authorities to preserve all physical, documentary, electronic, and forensic evidence related to the case and provide adequate protection for witnesses.

“FENRAD also calls for the public release of the investigation’s findings and the prosecution of anyone found culpable, regardless of status or political influence.

“We appeal to women’s rights organisations, civil society groups, labour unions, youth groups, professional associations, faith-based organisations, and other human rights advocates to join the demand for justice for Mary Habila.

“The pursuit of justice in this matter is not about personalities or politics. It is about protecting the sanctity of human life, defending the rule of law, strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions, and ensuring that no Nigerian is denied justice because of the status or influence of those connected to a case,” the statement said.
