The Federal Government, through the National Water Resources Institute (NWRI) in Kaduna and the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority in Yola, has inaugurated the 11th National Water Conference under the theme “Water and Society.”
This event, organized by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, runs from October 29 to 31, 2024, and brings together water resource experts, government officials, private sector stakeholders, and civil society representatives.
The aim is to address Nigeria’s water security challenges and explore sustainable solutions for water management.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelagwah, delivered the keynote address.
He highlighted the critical importance of water for societal well-being and national development, stating, “Water is more than just a resource; it is a cornerstone of life, civilization, and progress.”
He emphasized the need for strong governance, innovative solutions, and collaborative partnerships to address issues like rapid urbanization and climate change.
Prof. Utsev reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable water management, noting that “every citizen has the right to clean water and sanitation.”
He called for comprehensive solutions that combine governance, technology, and partnerships to create a more equitable and prosperous society.
Prof. Emmanuel A. Adanu, Director General of NWRI, represented by Engr. A. K. Ndahi, welcomed participants, encouraging them to see the conference as a springboard for change.
He advocated for practical and innovative ideas to shape a national blueprint for universal access to safe drinking water and efficient public water management.
Prof. Adanu highlighted that such efforts would enhance food self-sufficiency, reduce dependence on food imports, and generate employment.
Throughout the three-day event, attendees will participate in discussions, panels, and workshops on topics including:
Water for Peace: Exploring how water resources can foster stability.
WASH and Waste Management: Addressing challenges in sanitation and waste management.
Gender and Water Management: Examining the unique impacts of water access on women and children.
Climate Change and Water Security: Assessing climate change’s effects on water resources.
The opening ceremony saw the attendance of prominent figures, including Hon. Sada Soli, Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, a representative of the Lamido of Adamawa, as well as water experts and various stakeholders.
