Barely weeks after Stella Oduah’s 2, Kaduna is at the centre o55 million dollar bulletproof car saga, an agency of the Federal Government, the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON)f a raging storm of wanton purchases.
DICON has bought ten bulletproof cars which were brought into the country by a Saudi Arabian plane. The costs of the cars are however not certain yet.
According to news reports, DICON has no business purchasing bulletproof cars. Its primary responsibility is producing small arms and ammunition for the country. However, the way it is, the agency is stunted as its only visible production is furniture.
In addition, the purchasing of heavy weapons and bulletproof cars are the statutory responsibilities of Policy and Plans of the Defence Headquarters and not that of an agency like DICON.
Again, the budget allocation of DICON for 2013 is N2.59 billion. Of this sum nothing shows provision for the purchase of bulletproof cars. This raises more doubts and questions.
