FCCPC: 4U Supermarket Shutdown Over Unfair Price of Goods

In a recent enforcement operation, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) sealed 4U Supermarket located at 58 Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja. The shutdown came as a result of various violations observed during an extensive inspection conducted by the FCCPC.

During the enforcement exercise, officials from the FCCPC discovered multiple infractions, including unfair pricing practices, lack of transparency in pricing, and the sale of counterfeit rice. Specifically, 33 bags of fake Stallion and Caprice rice, infested with weevils, were evacuated from one of the supermarket’s branches.

The shutdown of 4U Supermarket is part of a broader initiative by the federal government to ensure compliance with price display and quantity regulations across supermarkets and markets within the Federal Capital Territory. Similar enforcement actions are planned for other major cities, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Ibadan, in the coming weeks.

Executive Secretary of FCCPC Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, expressed deep concern over the unfair practices observed in the supermarket, despite recent efforts to strengthen the naira and reduce production costs. Necessary sanctions will be imposed on the individuals responsible for the violations following thorough investigations.

Furthermore, the FCCPC has announced plans to introduce a price tracker to monitor commodity prices nationwide and crack down on arbitrary price increases by traders. The commission also intends to conduct raids on major open markets to ensure compliance with consumer protection regulations.

Yunusa Yusuf, the General Manager of 4U Supermarket, has taken responsibility for the sale of fake rice and has pledged to adhere to FCCPC regulations on consumer rights in the future.
