The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering a rule change that would empower consumers to unlock their phones just 60 days after purchase.
Currently, phones purchased through carriers are typically locked until the contract term expires or the device is fully paid off.
The proposed rule aims to enhance consumer flexibility by enabling them to switch carriers sooner without being bound by restrictive unlocking policies.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the importance of establishing clear and consistent nationwide guidelines to uphold consumer rights in choosing their wireless service providers.
This proposal will undergo a public feedback phase beginning on July 18, allowing stakeholders to provide input before the rule is finalized.
The FCC’s initiative marks a pivotal step towards promoting greater freedom and choice in the wireless communications market.
