Farmers in Nigeria are upset about a recent offer from Ukraine to send 25,000 tonnes of wheat to Nigeria as emergency food aid.
They think the Nigerian government should be doing more to make sure there’s enough food in the country, especially since Nigeria is not at war like Ukraine.
The Nigeria Farmers Group and Cooperative Society, which represents the farmers, criticized the government in a meeting with reporters in Abuja.
They said the value of Nigeria’s money, the Naira, has been dropping because the government hasn’t invested enough in advanced farming methods and agriculture.
The head of the farmers’ group, Retson Tedheke, explained that a government program called the Anchor Borrower’s program didn’t work well because the money was given to contractors instead of experienced farmers.
He said that instead of pressuring banks to give loans to farmers, the government should let the banks monitor the program.
Tedheke also said that the farmers’ group has a new plan called agbadovision, which uses technology to improve farming and prevent food shortages.
They want the government, especially President Bola Tinubu, to support this plan by investing in agriculture to create jobs and produce more food, which would also help strengthen the Naira.
Tedheke announced that the farmers’ group will launch a technology-driven farming investment program in the next month.
“We have learned we are people and we can utilize technology to put this land and people to good use. So today, a great day in the next one month we’re going to call all of you to the launch. ”
“This is a prolonged press conference in the next month, and within a month thereafter that not just 1 million, or 2 million, or 3 million or 5 million, but about $10 million is going to be on the table based on blockchain technology tokenizing NFGCS Farm Estate driving agriculture revolution for the greater good of our people, for the stability of our country, for national security, for social stability and a foundation that is impossible to be broken because food is life”.
This program, called agbadovision, will use blockchain technology to tokenize the NFGCS Farm Estate, which means turning the farm’s value into digital tokens. This will help raise $10 million to support agriculture in Nigeria.
Mike Onimisi, the app’s designer, said that AGBATOKENs will change how agricultural finance works by making it easier to fund farms and encourage sustainable farming practices.
