Falana pledges to pursue a legal challenge against the recent hike in electricity tariffs

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has strongly denounced the recent surge in electricity tariffs, labeling it as “unlawful” and pledging legal action in response.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Falana articulated his firm stance, emphasizing his intention to raise significant objections starting Monday.
He pointed out the disregard for certain legal procedures in implementing the tariff hike.
Falana dissected the government’s rationale behind the tariff increase, dismissing it as insufficient to meet the intended revenue targets. He voiced apprehension over the eventual transfer of the financial burden onto lower-income consumers who are presently shielded from the escalation.
Central to Falana’s critique is his contention that the government’s move to raise tariffs aims to prop up struggling electricity distribution companies, many of which are now under the control of banks and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
He argued that these entities lack the requisite expertise to manage the complexities of the power sector effectively.
Against the backdrop of the ongoing debate surrounding the electricity tariff surge, Falana’s outspoken stance reflects the wider public discontent with the escalating cost of electricity.
His vocal intervention underscores growing concerns about the government’s overarching strategy for the power sector and the potential ramifications for households.
While the outcome of Falana’s legal challenge remains uncertain, his intervention amplifies the voices of those opposed to the tariff hike, signaling a broader dissatisfaction with the government’s approach to addressing the challenges within the power sector.
