A faction of the Labour Party (LP) in Anambra State has affirmed its participation in the September 28 Local Government elections, urging the public to disregard statements from the former National and State Executives, led by Julius Abure and Ugo Emeh respectively, claiming that it is not participating.
In a communiqué issued after a meeting of the State Transition Committee on Wednesday in Awka, signed by a factional State LP Chairman, Peter Okoye, and Secretary, Jerry Nnubia, the party noted that ANSIEC had corrected the errors, which included mistakenly listing candidates from other parties under Labour Party.
Recall that the party’s Emeh-State leadership had withdrawn from the elections, citing the hasty amendment of the State Electoral Laws and other inconsistencies, which it said were challenging in court.
It had also accused the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, of publishing the names of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance members in the state as the LP’s candidates for the elections.
But the Okoye-led faction yesterday in the Communique confirmed that its candidates’ names have been rectified on the ANSIEC list, adding that they are ready for the polls and committed to winning.
The party appealed to Anambrarians to vote massively for LP candidates, describing the election as a crucial test for the 2025 governorship election.
The communiqué also commended Presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Oti for repositioning the party.
It congratulated the newly constituted 29-member National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman. It pledges loyalty and support and believes that the Committee will drive formidable Local Government and ward leadership structures.
The Labour Party assured of its commitment to the people of Anambra, promising to address pressing issues and work towards a better future.
The communique read in part, “The State Transition Committee of Labour Party Anambra State Chapter met on 18th of September, 2024 and deliberated on a wide range of issues affecting the progress of the party in the state in particular and the nation in general and came up with the following resolutions/ decisions:
“On the Local Government Election in Anambra State scheduled to be held on 28th September 2024, the Leadership of the State Transition Committee restated its earlier resolve that Labour Party Anambra State Chapter is participating in the election as scheduled by Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (AN SIEC).
“It is therefore our resolution that members of the public especially Anambrarians should disregard any statements issued by the former National Executive of Labour Party led by Barr. Julius Abure and the former State Executive of the Labour Party led by Ugo Emeh to the effect that the Labour Party is not participating in the election.
“The leadership of the State Transition Committee of our great party under Peter Okoye commends and appreciates the efforts the indefatigable leaders of our party in the persons of the Presidential candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, His Excellency Mr Peter Obi CON and the highest elected office holder of our party, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, the Executive Governor of Abia State for their untiring efforts to reposition the party for greater achievement in the political landscape of Nigeria.”
