The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a clarification following a social media complaint by an X user, @chupatric, who alleged he was detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) for using a GoPro camera to document his travels.
In a post shared online, the passenger wrote: “@mikeachimugu01 Good morning sir, please I have a question. At MMIA was detained by AVSEC cos of my gopro which I use to document my travels on my YouTube page. I was taken to the office downstairs, showed them video on my gallery was personal shots, can’t we make personal video?”
The post generated reactions from other users, with many questioning airport policies on personal recordings.
Responding to the concerns, FAAN said it understands the issues raised and appreciates the public conversation around the incident. According to the authority, the passenger was recording video within a restricted Security Screening area where signage clearly indicates that filming is not permitted.
FAAN explained that Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers politely advised the passenger to stop recording, noting that other travellers have the right not to be filmed without consent. The authority added that complaints from passengers about being recorded without permission are frequently received.
“When the passenger declined to comply, he was invited to the Crime Investigation and Intelligence Unit office for further clarification, not detained,” FAAN stated. The interaction, it said, focused on providing guidance regarding acceptable camera use within the airport environment.
The authority further disclosed that the passenger later acknowledged the issue, deleted the recording, provided a written undertaking, and was allowed to continue his journey without further hindrance.
FAAN reassured the public that personal selfie videos are not restricted within airport premises. However, intervention becomes necessary when filming involves other passengers without their consent or captures sensitive operational or security areas.
“These measures are in place to protect privacy, safety, and smooth airport operations,” the statement noted.
The airport authority concluded by appealing for public understanding and cooperation in maintaining a secure and comfortable travel environment for all passengers.
