Excellent Nigerian talents cost more than expatriates says Airtel’s CEO


Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Airtel Nigeria, Mr. Segun Ogunsanya has called on the leadership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) to celebrate and promote local talents, saying African talents should be adequately empowered and supported to take up corporate leadership opportunities across the continent and that good Nigerian talents actually cost more than average expatriates.

Ogunsanya, who was speaking Tuesday at the Investiture of the 16th CIPM President/Chairman of Council, CIPM, Mr. Victor Famuyibo, said Nigerian HR Practitioners should support local talents, provide world class training opportunities for Nigerian talents, imbibe the culture of paying for performance and create strong platforms to celebrate outstanding employees.

“I encourage the new President of the CIPM to be the catalyst of Africans for Africa initiative.

This is a strategic initiative. This assures Investment in our future prosperity. Let me also add that promoting Africans for Africa is not a cost cutting measure because good Nigerian talents actually cost more than average expatriates,” he said.

Ogunsanya also congratulated the new president and the CIPM, saying Airtel Nigeria is excited to be associated with the CIPM. “Indeed, we share similar values with the CIPM.

For one, the CIPM is a very credible and highly respected institution with a rich history. Airtel is also a respected Telecommunications Services Provider with a vision of becoming the most loved brand and the employer of first choice for Nigerian professionals.

“We are already on track to realizing this vision considering the endorsements and quality of feedback we have, thus far, received from reputable institutions and organized, independent bodies.”

In his response, Mr. Famuyibo said he is committed to realizing the vision of the CIPM. “I will not only be a gate keeper but a game changer in the way that you will all love it. I’ll strive to push the transformation agenda of the CIPM and I thank Mr. Segun Ogunsanya for his thoughts,” he said.

Also speaking at the occasion, Dr. Christopher Kolade, a seasoned technocrat, challenged members of the CIPM to become positive change agents in the society.

“I congratulate the Institute for raising the standard. I say this because standard is often said to be a commodity that is susceptible to the law of gravity. So, I applaud the leadership of the CIPM for maintaining its focus and keeping the standard up. I also urge all of you to raise the standards in our society and become positive agents,” he said.

The event, which held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, was attended by several personalities including past presidents of the CIPM, the Lagos State Head of Service, Adesegun Ogunlewe and Human Resources Director of Airtel Nigeria, Jubril Saba among others.
