Exam Celebration Turns Costly as Ondo Orders WASSCE to Withhold 17 Results

—

The Ondo State Government has directed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) authorities to withhold the results and testimonials of 17 students over what it described as acts of gross misconduct during the conclusion of their final examinations.

In a statement, the state Ministry of Education said the decision followed the circulation of viral videos showing students from three prominent secondary schools in Akure engaging in what it termed “indisciplined behaviour.”

According to the ministry, the students were seen tearing their school uniforms and chanting strange slogans shortly after writing their final examination paper—conduct the government said contravenes the core values and standards of discipline upheld by the state’s education system.

The affected students were identified as belonging to Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, all located in the Ondo State capital.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the ministry said the names of the 17 students would be entered into the disciplinary records, or “black books,” of their respective schools, while their WASSCE results and testimonials would be withheld pending further action.
