The former president of the National Association of Local Government Students, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Comr. Oluwasheyi Babaeko has commended the executive Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for granting local governments in the state unalloyed financial autonomy.
According to the former student leader, who is currently running a Master programme in University of Leeds, UK said the idea is unprecedented development and indeed a right step in a right direction because it will go a long way to give the third tier of government rapid growth and overall national development.
In the same vein, Dr. F. O Fagbohun, an Associate professor and the Head Department, Local Government Studies in OAU praised the Kaduna state government for the abolition of joint account between the state and local governments in Kaduna State as a welcome development which was long overdue. Fagbohun, however, advise that the governor’s directive should be handled meticulously and prudently. He pointed out the recklessness and corrupt nature of some executive chairmen of the local government.
He further enjoined the chairmen to be accountable and responsive noting that this ample opportunity given by the state governor is unparalleled and shouldn’t be toyed with, thereby appealing to other states of the federation to emulate Gov. Nasir el-Rufai by abolishing the joint accounts operated by both state and local governments.
