The Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Enugu Rangers, have shown interest in signing Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa, who has expressed his desire to return to the Nigerian top-flight league. Musa previously played in the league with Kano Pillars from 2009 to 2010 and had a second spell with the Sai Masu Gida in 2021.
On his X page, formerly Twitter, he shared an image of all 20 participating clubs in the NPFL, asking his followers which team they would like him to join:
“Let’s go again. Which of these teams do you wish for me to sign?”
Although the NPFL transfer window is closed, as a free agent, the AFCON champion can still sign with any NPFL side.
The Flying Antelopes’ head coach, Fidelis Illechukwu, spoke to Punch, asserting that Enugu Rangers are open to and would gladly welcome the 31-year-old to the club:
“I don’t know about it, but if he is truly going to come, it is going to be a welcome development for us because Musa is a superstar who is disciplined and a player everyone can work with. He has the right attitude.
“His image alone is something good for us. He has played for top clubs in Europe, and he ranks among the best scorers in the league. He will be a source of motivation for our current players and for many other Nigerian internationals to also come back to the league.
“He won’t have a problem settling down here because Rangers is a big club with the capacity to welcome players from all over the world, not just Nigeria. Particularly, we also have a lot of northerners in our team right now, so he won’t be lonely.”
Ahmed Musa represented Kano Pillars twice before rising to stardom when he was loaned from GBS Football Academy. In the 2009-10 season, Musa scored 18 goals, which was the most goals ever scored in the league at the time. He held this record for nine years before it was broken by Jude Aneke of Kaduna United, who scored 20 goals in 2020, setting a new record.
Musa, who is not currently on the 2024-25 squad sheet of Sivasspor, where he played last season, may have finished his contract and become a free agent this season. With the Turkish side, he made four appearances, scoring one goal in the 238 minutes he played.
Since moving to Europe from Kano Pillars, the Super Eagles’ most-capped player has featured for VVV-Venlo, CSKA Moscow, Leicester City, Al Nassr, and Faith Karagumruk, scoring a total of 69 club goals and providing 38 assists.
