England Face Argentina Amid Fresh Refereeing Controversy at World Cup

England have been handed a stern warning ahead of their World Cup clash with Argentina as fresh controversy over officiating continues to dominate headlines. Several teams knocked out by the reigning champions have raised questions about calls they believe favored Lionel Messi’s team.

Following Argentina’s stunning 3-1 extra-time quarterfinal victory, The News Chronicle reports that Switzerland joined Algeria and Egypt in alleging biased officiating. Manuel Akanji, a defender, said the game was the most one-sided he had ever seen; coach Murat Yakin found the officiating challenging to grasp; Swiss players and officials attacked many decisions.

Algeria formally protested to FIFA earlier in the tournament about crucial events in their loss against Argentina. Following their elimination, Egypt also sought an inquiry as team members claimed unjust treatment.

FIFA has strongly denied the claims, stating that the honesty of its officials is beyond doubt. Still, controversy grew when American referee Ismail Elfath was chosen to officiate England’s semifinal against Argentina, a decision that has sparked worldwide debate among fans.

Despite the controversy, England’s main focus remains securing victory on the pitch and ending Argentina’s title defense.
