Princess Rafatu Awofisayo, the last living child of Ooni Ademiluyi Ajagun, the 48th Ooni of Ife, has gracefully crossed the threshold of life at the age of 102, closing a chapter that has spanned over a century of royal history.
Her passing marks the sunset of a remarkable lineage, leaving a legacy as deep-rooted as the ancient trees of Ile-Ife.
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, showered glowing tributes on the late princess, describing her departure as “the end of a remarkable era.”
In a statement by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Mr Moses Olafare, on Wednesday in Ile-Ife, Oba Ogunwusi painted a portrait of a life well-lived, saying the late Awofisayo’s journey was “worthy of celebration rather than mourning,” a life dedicated to humanity, faith, and the preservation of Yoruba royal heritage.
“She walked in the footprints of her father, Ooni Ademiluyi Ajagun, with dignity and pride,” the Ooni said, adding that she was a custodian of culture, a guardian of tradition, and a keeper of the flame of the Oodua race.
Oba Ogunwusi lauded her humility, wisdom, and motherly love, noting that she nurtured generations like a gardener tending to a vast, flourishing orchard. Her influence stretched far and wide, earning her respect across religious and cultural lines.
Highlighting her pivotal role as the Iya Adinni of Ifeland, the Ooni said she was a cornerstone of the Muslim community, a guiding light who sowed seeds of unity, discipline, and compassion that continue to bear fruit.
”Mama was more than a royal figure; she was a spiritual beacon and a bridge between generations, whose life reflected divine grace and purpose,” he said.
The monarch urged the people of Ifeland and beyond to celebrate her life by living with purpose, serving others, and keeping faith close to their hearts, noting that her 102 years were a testament to a life richly blessed and fully lived.
Praying for her peaceful repose, Oba Ogunwusi expressed confidence that her legacy would remain a lodestar for generations yet unborn, a shining example that even as the sands of time slip through our fingers, true greatness leaves an indelible mark.oONI
