On the Palm/Passion Sunday, Year A (29 March 2026), I bring you greetings and God’s blessings!
Theme: Emulating Jesus, the Servant Leader!
Introduction
Friends in Christ, Passion Sunday is here, marking the beginning of Holy Week. It reminds us of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem as He prepares for His passion and glory. The Prophet Isaiah speaks of the suffering servant, while the second reading highlights Jesus’ humility, showing that He did not cling to equality with God. Instead, He embraced death on the cross, and God raised Him, giving Him a name above all others. The gospel shares the passion narrative filled with theological insights, assuring us that by imitating Jesus—who embodies humility, humanity, resilience, and divinity—we will not be shamed.
Today’s liturgical ceremony symbolizes our hope, as palms represent our willingness to march with Jesus in both triumph and struggle. As we process with palms, let us boldly proclaim Christ as our messiah. I invite you to reflect on the theme “Lessons in Self-Emptying,” which highlights Christ’s humility and willingness to lay down his life for us.
Review & Summary of the Readings
In the first reading (Is. 50:4-7), the Prophet Isaiah describes the suffering servant who offers his back to those who strike him and his cheeks to those who insult him. He remains steadfast, depending on God as his helper, saying: “I have set my face like a flint, I know I shall not be shamed.”
The reading from Philippians 2:6-11 portrays Jesus as a humble servant who, though divine, did not cling to His equality with God. He emptied Himself, becoming human and accepting death on the cross. God then exalted Him, giving Him a name above all names, so that every knee should bend and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
In the gospel passage (Mt 26:14-27:66) that recounts the passion narrative, we can uncover profound theological and pastoral insights that are both compelling and relevant:
Takeaway Lessons
1. Since those in political authority can be swayed by power like Pilate, leading them to manipulate the Truth, Christian politicians are encouraged to resist using power arbitrarily, knowing it is fleeting.
2. While the wicked commit acts of violence against innocent citizens, our liturgy reminds us to prioritise love over evil and forgiveness over revenge.
3. Our liturgy teaches that Kindness is stronger than anger, and we must be gentle, as gentleness surpasses rudeness.
4. Amid needless wars in Iran, Lebanon, Palestine and Ukraine, we are reminded that peace is stronger than war, which means that we must pray and work for peace.
5. The Palm Sunday liturgy invites us to embrace Jesus’ humility and learn the value of self-emptying in a world dominated by power and pride.
