Education experts have called on governments at all levels to prioritise teachers’ welfare, continuous training and the adoption of technology to improve learning outcomes and strengthen Nigeria’s education system.
The appeal was made on Thursday at a seminar organised by the Foundation for Human Capacity Development and Innovation for public and private primary school teachers in Suleja, Niger State.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Danlado Liman identified teachers, schools, learners, government and society as key factors influencing effective service delivery in the education sector.
He warned that poor teaching practices could result in low academic performance, rising school dropout rates, weak literacy and numeracy skills, examination malpractice and declining learner motivation.
According to Liman, ineffective service delivery also contributes to the production of low-quality graduates, reduced public confidence in schools, educational inequality, weak human capital development and slower national productivity.
He explained that quality service delivery in education goes beyond classroom instruction, encompassing effective lesson planning, learner assessment, guidance and counselling, as well as the holistic development of children.
Liman added that effective teaching requires adequate lesson preparation, appropriate instructional materials, positive teacher-learner relationships, inclusive teaching practices, ethical conduct and timely assessment of learners.
He stressed that improving education requires collaboration among teachers, school administrators, governments, parents and local communities.
“Best practices for efficient service delivery require the collective efforts of teachers, school administration, government, parents and the community,” Liman said.
Also speaking, Dr. Mohammad Awwal urged teachers to embrace digital literacy by acquiring computer skills and improving their understanding of Artificial Intelligence to remain relevant in modern classrooms.
He advocated improved teachers’ welfare, continuous professional development, stronger accountability mechanisms and wider adoption of technology-driven teaching methods.
Awwal also called on parents and communities to actively support educational activities, while urging education authorities to strengthen classroom monitoring and supervision.
“If we truly value education, then we must also value, support and invest in our primary school teachers,” he said.
Earlier, the Founder and Chairman of the Foundation for Human Capacity Development and Innovation, Rear Adm. Hamza Ibrahim (retd.), pledged to work with the Local Education Authority to implement the recommendations from the seminar.
The seminar focused on improving teaching quality through enhanced professional capacity, better welfare and the integration of technology into classroom instruction.
