Edo Government Set to Enhance E-Hailing Services with API Integration

—

In a bid to modernize and regulate the e-hailing services within its jurisdiction, the Edo State Government has unveiled plans to introduce API integration for ride-sharing platforms such as Bolt and Uber.
This initiative was announced by Edugie Agbonlahor, the Managing Director of the Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), during a driver safety summit held recently.
The integration of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) is a key component of the government’s strategy to implement comprehensive e-hailing regulations.
By incorporating this technology, authorities aim to enhance the efficiency and orderliness of the state’s e-hailing environment.
One of the notable features of this integration is the provision of visual identifiers to drivers operating on e-hailing platforms.
These identifiers will serve to exempt drivers from daily ticketing, thus streamlining operations and ensuring a smoother experience for both drivers and passengers.
The decision to adopt API integration follows similar moves by other Nigerian states, including Lagos.
Notably, Lagos State recently announced a data-sharing agreement with ride-hailing companies, coupled with backend API integration.
Lagos also imposed annual license fees and per-trip road improvement levies on ride-hailing platforms, sparking some contention, particularly with Uber, over the enforcement of data-sharing provisions.
Stakeholders in the e-hailing industry are eagerly anticipating the specifics of the Edo State regulations and how ride-hailing operators will respond to these developments.
