Dust Haze Persists in North as NiMet Predicts Sun, Isolated Southern Rains

—

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread dust haze across the Northern and Central parts of the country, with generally sunny conditions and isolated thunderstorms expected in parts of the South.

In its Daily Weather Outlook valid for Wednesday, January 28, 2026, NiMet said moderate dust haze will dominate the Northern States during the morning hours, reducing horizontal visibility to between two and five kilometres.

The agency added that parts of Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa States may experience localized poor visibility of less than 1,000 metres, especially early in the day.

According to the forecast, the hazy conditions are expected to persist into the afternoon and evening across the North, with continued localized poor visibility in the affected states.

For the North Central region, NiMet projected similar conditions, with moderate dust haze anticipated during the morning and prevailing throughout the day across the Central States.

In contrast, the Southern States are expected to experience more favourable weather conditions. NiMet forecast sunny skies with a few patches of cloud during the morning hours across the region.

As the day progresses, sunny intervals with cloud patches are expected, alongside slim chances of thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States. Other areas in the South are expected to remain largely sunny with few cloud patches.

Advising Nigerians to remain weather-aware, NiMet cautioned that dust haze could significantly reduce horizontal visibility, particularly in the early morning hours.

The agency urged people with respiratory conditions to take necessary health precautions, while motorists were advised to exercise caution when driving under hazy conditions.

NiMet also encouraged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather information from the agency to support effective flight planning and safe operations.

The agency extended its compliments of the season to Nigerians and reiterated its commitment to providing timely and accurate weather information to support safety and daily activities across the country.
