Don’t Give Up On Me

I gave up my profession, my friends, for you.

I couldn’t abandon you at the last moment.

We had walked and talked words and worlds

for so long a time together that I couldn’t imagine

a life without you. My heart, my epicenter, my passion,

did I not fully choose you over friends, family, football

and its fame, fortune, fun and fastness? Did I not? Tell me!

Were I not willing to sacrifice my time and sanity on the altar

of the pen and paper? Had I not seen wise workhands sacrificed

on the altar of profit? Poetry, I know you are not always profitable,

but don’t betray me, don’t give up on me since I lost my sanity to you!

Football, I forfeited, forwent for you. Did I not perish on your altar, poetry?

In science there is a drop, in ignorance a sea.
