‘Disgraced Country’- Obi Reacts to Wike–Naval Officer Face-Off

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer as a disturbing reflection of Nigeria’s deepening institutional disorder.

Obi, in a statement titled “Wike Versus Naval Officer: A Lesson for National Reflection,” made available to The News Chronicle said the clash, which has dominated national discourse, exposes how civility and due process have given way to public confrontation and impunity in governance.

“What should have been a routine civic encounter has, once again, become a national embarrassment — a typical example coming out of a ‘disgraced country,’” Obi lamented.

He questioned the growing trend of deploying military officers for civil operations and the lack of clear boundaries between political authority and security agencies.

“Should the military be used for purely civil operations? Should a Minister’s intervention in such matters be in such an indecorous manner?” he asked.

The former governor of Anambra state said the incident underscores Nigeria’s declining respect for institutions, discipline, and the rule of law, warning that such public spectacles erode public trust and set a poor example for younger generations.

“We must rebuild a nation where institutions are stronger than individuals; where public office is exercised with humility and restraint; and where the dignity of our uniformed officers and the rights of every citizen are upheld,” he added.

He stressed that for Nigeria to command global respect, it must replace “the culture of impunity with the discipline of law and order.”

“To be called His Excellency or Honourable should mean something. Our conduct in and out of office must reflect the titles we bear,” Obi stated.

Obi urged leaders at all levels to learn from the episode and recommit to strengthening democratic institutions rather than personalities.
