A Bauchi-based endocrinologist, Dr Ayuba Mugana, has advised people living with diabetes to regularly consult endocrinologists for quality care, proper counselling, and effective management of the condition.
Mugana gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bauchi.
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body is unable to effectively produce or use insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
He said people living with diabetes must strictly adhere to medical guidelines and treatment plans to prevent complications associated with the condition.
According to him, endocrinologists are specially trained to manage diabetes and other hormonal disorders.
He noted that while other doctors can manage diabetes, patients — especially those newly diagnosed — would benefit from consulting an endocrinologist early.
“Not that other doctors cannot manage diabetes, but it is better for patients, especially those newly diagnosed, to see an endocrinologist as early as possible,” he said.
The expert advised newly diagnosed patients to engage in regular physical exercise, saying it helps manage diabetes, high blood pressure, and cholesterol levels.
He also stressed the importance of healthy eating habits, adherence to dietary recommendations, and regular blood glucose monitoring.
Mugana explained that while Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be controlled or improved through lifestyle changes and treatment, HIV/AIDS cannot be reversed.
He added that both conditions could be effectively managed through proper medical care, medication adherence, and regular follow-up with healthcare professionals.
He encouraged patients living with either condition to seek timely medical attention and comply with treatment recommendations to maintain a better quality of life.
