Death Sentence For Traffickers Not Panacea – Senator

—

Former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani has weighed in on the issue of drug trafficking in the country, expressing concerns over its detrimental impact on Nigeria’s reputation and the lives of its youth.
Sani, known for his outspoken views, took to social media platform X to share his thoughts on the recently passed death penalty for drug traffickers by the National Assembly.
In his post, Sani acknowledged the significance of the death penalty as a deterrent but raised doubts about its effectiveness in curbing drug trafficking. He pointed out that many destination countries for drug traffickers also enforce the death penalty, suggesting that its deterrent effect may be limited. Instead, Sani advocated for a multi-faceted approach that goes beyond punitive measures.
Sani called on the Nigerian government to engage in vigorous community and national advocacy efforts to discourage drug trafficking. He emphasized the need for providing legitimate economic alternatives to young people, addressing the root causes that drive them towards illicit activities.
