Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about his interest in the ongoing Edo State governorship election.
Reports show that residents turned out in large numbers across Edo State on Saturday to vote in the off-cycle gubernatorial election.
Davido has been actively speaking out on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where he has criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged irregularities during the election.
Many people have wondered why the singer, who isn’t from Edo State, is so invested in the election.
In response to these questions, Davido explained via his X handle that his late mother, Imade Veronica Adeleke, was originally from Edo State. He added that beyond his personal connection, he believes every Nigerian should care about the fairness of elections.
He also recalled a similar situation during the Osun State gubernatorial election when he had to call out INEC repeatedly. At the time, his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, who is now the governor, was running for office.
Davido tweeted, “For those asking why I’m interested in the Edo election, my mom was from Edo… But as Nigerians, we should all be concerned. @inecnigeria, shame on you. I remember how many times I had to speak up before they got it right in Osun! It’s really bad. God help us.”
It’s worth noting that Davido had earlier endorsed the PDP candidate, Asuen Ighodalo, for the Edo governorship race on his Instagram page.
