The National Industrial Court in Abuja has struck down the policy compelling Nigerian military officers to serve a minimum of 15 years before resignation.
Justice Emmanuel D. Subilim, ruling in favour of Flight Lieutenant J.A. Akerele, declared the rule unconstitutional and likened it to “modern-day slavery.”
The court held that personnel have the constitutional right to resign at any time, voiding the relevant provisions of the Armed Forces’ service terms.
The Nigerian Air Force was also barred from arresting or compelling Akerele to remain in service.
