Court Jails Two Men for Stealing ₦2.3m Armoured Cables in Kaduna

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced two men, Justin Amos and Gideon Sylvester, to 18 months’ imprisonment each for stealing armoured cables valued at ₦2.3 million.

The convicts, aged 24 and 26 respectively, both of no fixed address, were arraigned on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

They pleaded guilty to the charges and appealed to the court for leniency.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel sentenced the duo to 18 months in prison but gave each of them the option of paying a ₦50,000 fine.

The magistrate also warned the convicts against engaging in criminal activities, saying the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that police officers attached to the Barnawa Division arrested the suspects on July 26.

Leo said the officers intercepted the pair while they were transporting armoured cables worth ₦2.3 million on a motorcycle.

According to the prosecutor, the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for their possession of the cables during police interrogation.

He added that the offences contravened the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
