Court Jails Man for Attack After Being Denied Party Food in Ibadan

A Magistrates’ Court sitting at Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Tuesday sent a 30-year-old man, Olatunde Busayo, behind bars for six months after a dispute over food spiralled into violence.

Busayo was docked on a one-count charge of assault and wasted no time admitting guilt when the charge was read to him.

Following his plea, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs Olasinmibo Sanusi-Zubair, found him guilty and slammed a six-month jail term on him, with no option of fine—drawing a firm line in the sand against violent conduct.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Olagoke Adegbenro, told the court that the incident occurred on Dec. 7 at about 11:00 a.m. at Olunloyo Estate, New GRA, Ibadan.

According to him, Busayo, described as an ex-convict, attacked Mr Patrick Isaiah, a security guard and neighbour, with a cutlass.

Adegbenro explained that trouble brewed after a ceremony held in Isaiah’s compound, where Busayo allegedly became enraged for not being given food.

What began as a grudge quickly turned into a chase, the prosecutor said, adding that Busayo pursued Isaiah on the street and struck him on the neck with a cutlass.

He told the court that the offence runs foul of Section 355 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
