Court in Kano sends housewife to prison for allegedly stabbing househelp to death

A woman from Unguwa Uku Quarters, Kano, is currently facing legal proceedings for two charges: attempting suicide and causing culpable homicide.

Chief Magistrate Hadiza Abdulrahman has directed the defendant’s remand and scheduled the next court appearance for February 1, 2024.

During the court session, Prosecution Counsel Lamido Sorondinki informed the court that on December 20, the defendant tried to take her own life using a sharp knife, resulting in a self-inflicted injury on the left hand.

Disturbingly, during this attempt, the defendant also used the knife to fatally stab Nafiu on the chest and other parts of his body.

The defendant pleaded guilty to attempting suicide but pleaded not guilty to the culpable homicide charge. These actions are in violation of sections 281 and 221 of the Penal Code.

In a related development, Hafsat’s husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, along with Adamu Muhammad and Nasidi Muhammad, were brought before the Chief Magistrates’ Court. They are accused of concealing facts regarding the alleged murder of Nafiu.

The charges against them include criminal conspiracy, concealment of fact, and false information.

Sorondinki alleged that on December 20, the defendants, along with Haruna Adamu (who is currently at large), conspired to hide the true cause of Nafiu’s death.

They allegedly provided false information to the deceased’s family, claiming that he died as a result of pile surgery.

The defendants denied the charges. According to the prosecutor, their actions contravene sections 97, 277, and 178 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution has received a case diary from the police, which will be studied for legal advice.

“We have received a copy of the case diary from the police, we will study it and issue legal advice.

“My lord, we will furnish the defence counsel with all the facilities concerning the case,” According to him”.

The defense counsel, Rabiu Sidi and Rabiu Abdullahi, requested bail for the defendants, emphasizing the need for justice to be served.

The magistrate, however, ordered the defendants to be remanded in a Correctional Center and set the next court date for January 8, 2024, for further mention.
