Corps Member Donates Eco-Friendly Waste Disposal Worth N2.5 Million to Makurdi Markets

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Chika Michelle, with the state code BN/23B/1713, serving in Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, has completed a significant personal community development project.

Chika, who is attached to the Ministry of Works, Housing, and Urban Development in Makurdi, has donated eco-friendly waste disposal units worth N2.5 million to various markets in the town.

The project saw the donation of four aluminum galvanized waste dump containers to four major markets across Makurdi, namely High-level, Railway, Wadata, and North Bank markets.

These containers are designed to be eco-friendly and are expected to greatly improve waste management in these busy market areas.

Chika, a graduate of Architecture and Environmental Design, explained that her motivation for the project stemmed from her observation that many market places in Makurdi lacked adequate waste disposal facilities.

She recognized the critical need for proper sanitation and hygiene, which drove her to initiate the project.

She named her personal Community Development Service (CDS) program “Revamping Makurdi,” with a focus on waste management, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 15, which emphasize clean water and sanitation.

In addition to providing the waste disposal units, Chika also organized a training workshop at Makurdi International School. With the assistance of volunteers, she educated students on how to transform waste into valuable resources, thus promoting the concept of “waste to wealth.”

The state Coordinator of NYSC in Benue State, Mr. Abe Dankaro Ashumate, commended Chika for her dedication and thoughtful initiative.

Represented by the Assistant Director of the CDS Branch, Mrs. Stella Beaulah Gokum, Mr. Ashumate expressed his appreciation and prayed for abundant rewards for Chika’s efforts.

The event was highlighted by the presentation of letters of ownership to the representatives of the beneficiary markets, symbolizing the formal handover of the waste disposal units and marking the successful completion of Chika Michelle’s impactful project.
