Uruguay triumphed over Canada today to end the 2024 Copa America tournament with a silver medal, beating their South American counterpart during the penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in regular time.
Luis Suarez, during the extra minutes of regular time, rescued a 2-2 draw for Uruguay when it seemed to be all over, with Uruguay’s first goal coming from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
Canada leveled in the first half and even commanded a lead of 2-1 in the first half but were denied a historic moment in the late minutes. A third-place finish would be a huge achievement for Canada, who have never won the Gold Cup and only made their maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in 2022.
Canada missed two penalties from the five they played, while Uruguay scored all four of their spot kicks.
