Conflict reportedly escalates between Boko Haram and ISWAP in Borno

—

In the past month, there has been increased conflict between Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Sambisa Forest and along the shores of Lake Chad.

The ongoing clashes have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of fighters from both factions, as reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region.

According to Makama, the Boko Haram group in the Sambisa Forest has suffered significant losses in terms of manpower and resources, with many of their commanders surrendering to Nigerian forces.

However, those who contemplate returning to Boko Haram after surrendering face the threat of being considered spies and eliminated by the group.

Makama disclosed this information in a post on X on Tuesday, emphasizing that the upcoming days are expected to be particularly intriguing.

In a video shared on his X handle, he detailed how Boko Haram attacked ISWAP’s position in Gaizuwa, Sambisa Forest, following ISWAP’s evacuation.

Gaizuwa, previously a stronghold of Boko Haram a few kilometers from Bama LGA, fell under ISWAP’s control after they defeated the Boko Haram faction led by Alhaji Air Hajja Fusambe.

The security expert’s insights shed light on the dynamics of the conflict, pointing to the internal struggles and power shifts within these extremist groups in the region.
