Claude AI Goes Free, Offers Memory and Training Courses Open to All Users

Anthropic has launched a free online learning platform offering structured courses on how to use its artificial intelligence system, Claude.

This latest development intensifies its competition with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT.

The new training portal, hosted on Skilljar, provides self-paced courses for developers, students, and educators. Course tracks include “Claude 101,” “Claude Code in Action,” and “Building with the Claude API.”

The company said the courses focus on practical use cases such as coding, API integration, and applying the Model Context Protocol to connect AI systems with external software tools. Participants who complete the courses receive certificates acknowledging their training.

Anthropic said the initiative is intended to improve AI fluency and expand access to technical education at no cost. A Skilljar account is required to track course progress and issue certificates.

According to the company’s published information, Skilljar collects learning analytics such as lesson completion and quiz results, while Claude usage data remains separate under Anthropic’s own account system.

The education launch follows a separate product update announced this week. Anthropic confirmed that it has extended Claude’s memory feature to free users.

The feature allows the chatbot to retain context across conversations, enabling more consistent responses over time. The memory function had previously been limited to paid subscribers.

The update brings Claude’s free offering in line with features already available on ChatGPT’s free tier.

Anthropic also introduced a simplified method for users to import prior conversation histories from other AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, through copy-and-paste tools designed to ease switching between platforms.

The product changes come during a period of increased public attention for the company. According to a report published March 3 by Bloomberg L.P., Claude’s free active users have increased by more than 60 percent since January 2026, while daily signups have quadrupled over the same period.

The surge in usage followed a dispute between Anthropic and U.S. defense authorities. On Friday, President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to remove Claude from their systems after the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a supply-chain risk.

The decision stemmed from concerns related to potential surveillance and autonomous weapons applications.

During the same period, OpenAI announced plans to deploy its AI models within the U.S. Defense Department’s classified network. The contrasting approaches drew attention from technology users and policymakers.

Anthropic also reported that Claude experienced a service disruption on March 3 due to what the company described as “unprecedented demand.” Service was restored later that morning in New York time.

Claude was founded in 2021 and has its headquarters in San Francisco. Since then, Anthropic has positioned itself as an AI company focused on safety and controlled deployment.

The introduction of structured education programs and expanded free features indicates an attempt to grow its consumer and developer base while competing directly with OpenAI’s established ecosystem.
