On November 16, 1930, in Ogidi, a boy was born who would change how the world reads Africa. Albert Chinualumogu Achebe, later simply Chinua Achebe. In April 2014, at the London Hilton, we gathered to mark the first anniversary of his passing. As I closed my address that night, I said something I had never planned: “I am an Ijebu man from the Southwest region of Nigeria, born by a Northern mother (Idoma), at the heart of the Eastern region of Enugu. Therefore, I’m a miniature map of Nigeria.”
That unplanned sentence became my life’s thesis Sir.
Before Achebe, many European literary works portrayed Africa as primitive, backward, without systems. Achebe believed Africans needed to tell their own stories. In 1958 he published Things Fall Apart — Okonkwo in Umuofia — Custom, religion, justice, titles, family — Then colonial disruption. He placed African people at centre, not background. Translated 50+ languages. Man Booker International 2007. Anthills of the Savannah, A Man of the People, Arrow of God, No Longer at Ease — He did not only criticise Europe, he challenged Africans. 1962 founding editor Heinemann African Writers Series — Platform for African voices. Biafra cultural ambassador 1967-1970. There Was a Country 2012. Died March 21, 2013 Boston aged 82.
Achebe’s Burden — The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership — The Trouble with Nigeria 1983 — That plus mutual suspicion and distrust.
The Miniature Map — I did not choose my coordinates. Ijebu heritage father, Northern blood mother, Eastern soil Enugu first cry. Three regions, one person, one story. Grew up eating amala, miyan kuka, jollof. Heard proverbs Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo. If one man can carry Southwest, North, East without contradiction, then Nigeria can too. If I can be miniature map, Nigeria can be giant map of possibility. Achebe gave diagnosis, miniature maps give evidence.
2026 UPDATE — From Diagnosis to 5Cs Grassroots Education & Empowerment Strategy — WITNESS 2026/2036
Prof Oloyede advises from Singapore — “We need a grassroots education and empowerment strategy. That is my advice.” — Agreed Sir. That is our thesis today.
1. Conscience — Itu Egwu Chineke — WHERE IS OUR STORY? WHERE IS THE MONEY? Achebe asked where is our story — We ask where is $20.52bn + €1.045bn promised for Ajaokuta 24k hectares N4trn no steel 43 years, ALSCON, Airways, Refineries, $109m of $500m women fund — Contents not cover — Diabetes metaphor Prof used — Decades of sores — Treatment is truth — Market, school, church, mosque, WhatsApp street curriculum — Track, document, report — 200m Umpires Are Watching.
2. Competence — Igba Mbo — Gasoline FDI Build Not Share —*Achebe did not share loans, he built writers — African Writers Series — Same Prof competence call — Tactical deployment purely on money Nigeria generates — Not loan house — Build from Aso Rock to Farm Settlement.
3. Character — Agwa Oma — No stealing — A Man of the People warned — No stealing for 3 months fixes years — Until politicians FEAR grassroots, elites have no chance — Educated grassroots not violent revolution — 80-90% miseducated about democracy.
4. Courage — To tell truth where unwelcome — Biafra ambassador Achebe, Digital Imam Sheikh Khalid sacked April 2022 Apo Mosque for condemning terrorists, Fela inside corrupt system — That is courage — Like Shadrach Meshach Abednego — That is WITNESS.
5. Compassion — Children are stakeholders — Stories remain — Things Fall Apart still in schools — Achebe resisted father of African literature because storytelling existed before him — Humility — Trinity — Ki Olorun Tun Ilu Wa Se / Allah Ya Gyara Kasar Mu / Chineke Mezie Obodo Anyi — Government = SERVANT Not SAVIOUR.
Achebe once said — If you don’t like someone’s story, write your own. I have written mine — From miniature map to 200m Umpires — Trinity — From Aso Rock to Farm Settlement, Not Aso Rock to Loan House — Time will tell.
