Chinese expatriate begs for clemency in girlfriend’s murder case

Frank Geng Quangrong, a Chinese national, who is accused of causing the death of his girlfriend, Ummulkhulsum Sani Buhari, by culpable homicide, has denied intentionally killing her.

He pleaded with Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court, asserting that he stabbed her in self-defense when she allegedly grabbed his testes.

Quangrong expressed his plea for leniency, stating, “I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defense after she grabbed my testes.” He emphasized his desire for the court to consider mercy in its judgment.

The alleged incident took place following a misunderstanding in Kano, leading to Ummulkhulsum’s tragic death.

The court proceedings unfolded on Tuesday, and Justice Ado Ma’aji scheduled March 29, 2024, as the judgment date for the case of alleged culpable homicide.

The decision came after both the prosecution and defense counsel presented their final written arguments.

The prosecution, supporting the culpable homicide allegations under Section 221(b) of the Penal Code, called six witnesses, including the deceased’s mother and sister, a neighbor, a doctor, and Investigative Police Officers.

These witnesses testified about the events that transpired between Quangrong and Ummulkhulsum on September 16, 2022.

During his testimony, Quangrong maintained that he did not intentionally cause Ummulkhulsum’s death. To support his defense, a consultant urologist, Dr. Abubakar Abdullahi, provided expert testimony.

With over 30 years of experience, the doctor explained that prolonged pressure on the end nerves could lead to changes in feelings.

He also highlighted that the release of adrenaline could result in over-stimulation of the vagus nerve, triggering fright, fight, or flight responses.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the plea for mercy from Quangrong remains a central aspect of the case, and the court is set to deliver its judgment in March 2024.
