Senator Ayo Akinyelure, who voted to support the controversial under-age marriage proposal, made a U-turn and begged his constituents to forgive him. Weeping openly, the Senator who represents Ondo State Central at the National Assembly, prostrated at a stakeholders meeting held at Adegbemile Cultural Centre in Akure, where he was summoned by his constituents. The Senator pleaded for forgiveness, saying he voted in error.
The Senator was unmasked by an online newspaper, Daily Post, as one of those who voted for the controversial proposal. He was the only lawmaker from the South West who supported the proposal. Senator claimed that he mistakenly press “NO” instead of “YES” during the voting process, which was electronic.
The Senator further said: “Before this issue occurred, what the Senate considered for determination under the review of Nigerian constitution was renunciation of citizenship under the constitution contained under section 29 (4b) which provides that all married women shall be of age”. It is worthy of note that full age has been defined under section 29 (4a) to mean “the age of 18 years and above”.
“Therefore, my voting “No” was in clear error of misinterpretation and I had no opportunity to correct what is deemed to be my error now, because I would have been able to correct my error before the voting was concluded by the Senate. We make use of electronic vote and you can’t make correction ones you make an error.
Some of the people who spoke at the meeting said the Senator had taken a stance which embarrassed the Ondo State and his Senatorial District.
is child marriage wort discussing right now, than discussing how our country will move ahead brightly, many of our youths are there seeking for job, how to tackle the increment of unemployment, bad roads, electricity “F9”, how to tackle the issue of health rather than moving abroad to take medications, how to develop infrastructures. they are insane, we are in democracy government, we the citizens of this country says “NO” to their bill.
soon they will pass a bill which says that father can marry his daughter. Assholes.
No medicine after death! the deed has been done and only God knows the intent of his heart.
Dis one na expensive mistake ooo……
Those that assented to the bill are the ones that will stil divorce this little children when they are infected with the VVF virus as a result of their reproductive system not matured enough to give birth to children.
We all must stand up and fight for the right of the Nigerian child!
Why apologising when the deed has been done already? Even the life of your children will be at risk of the coming abuse, if the law is eventually passed.
What was he thinking, when issue of this gravity was been deliberated upon?
