Chelsea could be heading for another major behind-the-scenes change, with Todd Boehly and Mark Walter reportedly considering selling their stakes in the club to the club’s majority shareholder, Clearlake Capital.
The development comes just four years after the BlueCo consortium completed its takeover of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. Clearlake currently owns 61.5 per cent of the club, while Boehly, Walter and Hansjorg Wyss control the remaining shares.
The News Chronicle reports that talks about the buyout of the club have allegedly been taking place for several months, as issues concerning the direction of the club and the development of the stadium fuel speculation about the ownership structure.
While Chelsea has invested nearly £1.5 billion in players during the tenure, there have been multiple managerial changes and disappointing league results.
The newly appointed manager, Xabi Alonso, is expected to rebuild the roster after another busy transfer period that saw the addition of experienced players such as Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.
The rumored deal would enable Clearlake to take over almost total control of Chelsea and enhance the influence of Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano.
It will be interesting to see if the impending ownership transition leads to a new era of success, both on and off the pitch, for the Blues.
