Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that the 2024 UEFA Euros tournament will be his last, marking his sixth appearance in the competition, the most by any player.

At 39, Ronaldo holds the records for most goals scored (14) and most appearances (28) in the Euros.

“But I’m not moved by this, I’m moved by enthusiasm,” Ronaldo said.

“I felt sorry for the fans. I’ll always give my best for this shirt, whether I miss or not. And I’ll do this my whole life. You have to take responsibility.”

Last night was dramatic and emotional for Ronaldo, who missed a crucial penalty but redeemed himself by scoring during the penalty shootout against Slovenia, helping Portugal advance to the quarterfinals.

Ronaldo’s journey in the UEFA Euros began 20 years ago when Portugal beat England in a penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. Portugal then defeated the Netherlands in the semifinals with Ronaldo scoring in the 2-1 victory, but they were ultimately denied the trophy by Greece.

Twelve years later, Ronaldo finally laid his hands on the coveted trophy after Portugal overcame France in the final, where he played a pivotal role as both player and motivator.
