WITNESS 2026: CONSCIENCE. COMPETENCE. CHARACTER.
Great people, excellent minds.
A nation that cannot see beyond the present is a nation condemned to repeat it.
Today, too many of us are consumed with surviving today that we have lost vision for tomorrow.
But builders think differently.
A builder does not only ask, “What do I need today?”
A builder asks, “What must I start today so that tomorrow will be better?”
The late Chief Obafemi Awolowo warned us in 1947:
Poverty makes you survive today.
Ignorance makes you forget tomorrow.
Education makes you build for 10 years from now.
That word is more urgent in 2026 than it was in 1947.
1. FORESIGHT SEES WHAT EYES CANNOT SEE
Great nations are not built by reacting to today’s problems.
They are built by people who anticipate tomorrow’s needs and prepare for them today.
The difference between a consumer and a builder is time horizon.
A consumer asks: What can I get now?
A builder asks: _What can I build that will outlive me?
Ask yourself honestly:
What Nigeria are we building for the next generation?
What decisions we make today will still matter 10 years from now?
What institutions, systems, and values will our children inherit from us?
Builders do not just consume what previous generations created.
Builders add what future generations can inherit.
2. FROM SURVIVAL TO CONSTRUCTION
There is nothing wrong with meeting today’s needs. Food, shelter, security matter.
But if all our national energy stops there, we will never create the future we desire.
We must make a deliberate shift:
From “What can I get?” to “What can I build?”
From “What benefits me now?” to “What benefits those after me?”
From temporary gratification to lasting value.
This is the essence of education.
Education is not about collecting certificates.
True education expands your capacity to think, to anticipate, to innovate, and to build.
If we are educated but cannot think beyond today, then we have missed the purpose of knowledge.
3. WE MUST PLANT TREES WE MAY NEVER SIT UNDER
A wise generation does not consume everything it receives.
It builds. It documents. It trains. It mentors.
It establishes systems. It invests. It prepares successors.
Builders plant trees they may never sit under.
The greatest proof of foresight is that your work continues to create value even when you are no longer in the room.
That is legacy. That is nation-building.
This is why WITNESS 2026 insists on CONSCIENCE. COMPETENCE. CHARACTER.
Because without conscience, we will steal the future.
Without competence, we cannot build the future.
Without character, we will not stay to protect the future.
THE CHARGE
My people, do not allow today’s struggle to make you blind to tomorrow’s possibilities.
Survival may explain where we are today.
But foresight will determine what we build for tomorrow.
See farther. Think deeper. Learn continually. Build intentionally.
Because the future belongs to those who can see it before it arrives — and have the courage to build for it today.
