Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced its exit from Nigeria after 12 years of operations in the country.
The company said it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026, following a review of its business priorities and investment strategy.
Uber disclosed the decision in a statement to customers on Wednesday, describing it as a “difficult” decision after more than a decade of providing ride-hailing services in Nigeria.
The company launched its services in Lagos in 2014 and subsequently expanded to several Nigerian cities, becoming one of the major players in the country’s rapidly growing e-hailing industry.
Uber said its decision to leave Nigeria followed a review of its “evolving business priorities and investment focus across the continent.”
The company, however, stressed that its withdrawal from Nigeria does not amount to an exit from the wider African market, saying it remains committed to Sub-Saharan Africa.
Uber also clarified that its decision was not linked to the recent Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) directive concerning e-hailing operations at Nigerian airports.
The development comes barely weeks after controversy over restrictions affecting Uber and Bolt operations at airports. FAAN had said the issue centred on establishing an appropriate regulatory framework for commercial transportation services operating within airport premises.
Uber’s exit marks the end of a 12-year presence in Nigeria and is expected to have implications for thousands of drivers and millions of riders who have relied on the platform for transportation.
The company said its immediate priority was to support drivers, riders and local team members through the transition.
