BREAKING: Supreme Court affirms five-year sentence of former lawmaker Farouk Lawan

—

The Supreme Court has decided to maintain the five-year prison sentence for Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives.

He was given this sentence after being found guilty of accepting a bribe amounting to $500,000 from businessman Femi Otedola.

Lawan faced charges related to his involvement in receiving a $500,000 bribe during a legislative investigation into the fuel subsidy system back in 2012.

The court’s decision affirms the severity of his actions in connection with the corruption scandal that unfolded during the fuel subsidy probe.

It is noteworthy that the term “Honourable” is often used as a title for members of the House of Representatives in some countries, and in this context, it’s employed to refer to Farouk Lawan.

The verdict underscores the legal consequences for individuals engaged in corrupt practices, even those within the legislative body responsible for overseeing such matters.
