President Bola Tinubu has reportedly removed Kayode Egbetokun from his position as Inspector General of Police.
Sources confirmed that the President directed Egbetokun to prepare his handover notes following a meeting at the Presidential Villa.
He is expected to hand over to Tunji Disu, currently the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.
Senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission disclosed that Egbetokun’s removal followed mounting controversies surrounding his tenure, including allegations of favoritism, questionable promotions, and financial impropriety.
His extended stay in office beyond the mandatory retirement age had sparked criticism from civil society groups, who argued that it contravened established police service rules.
There were also reports of internal dissatisfaction within the force, with some officers said to have celebrated news of his removal.
Egbetokun’s tenure was marked by legal disputes with activists and media platforms over corruption allegations and reports concerning his office and family.
Tunji Disu is expected to assume office immediately as the new Inspector General of Police.
