BREAKING: Nigeria Braces for Hospital Shutdown as Resident Doctors Embark on Five-Day Strike Friday

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced a five-day warning strike, set to begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025, in a bid to press home long-standing demands over welfare and working conditions.

The decision, reached after an extended online National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that dragged into the early hours of Thursday, September 11, was confirmed in a statement by NARD’s General Secretary, Agbor Affiong.

All centres are hereby directed to inform their hospital managements and fully comply with the strike action,” the statement read.

The action is expected to paralyze activities in public hospitals across the country until Tuesday, September 16.

NARD President, Osundara Zenith, had earlier hinted at the move, citing poor working conditions, inadequate power supply, certificate downgrading, poor remuneration, and other grievances as triggers for the shutdown; The News Chronicle gathered.

The strike comes as resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory are already observing a separate seven-day warning strike, which commenced Monday.
