Breaking: Former first lady of Nigeria is dead

Chief Mrs Victoria Aguiyi Ironsi, wife of former military leader after the first coup of 1966, is dead.

She died this morning peacefully. she was aged 97.

Her husband who introduced the unitary system of government in Nigeria was killed in what has been termed a counter coup on July 29, 1966 after assuming power in January of the same year.

Preparations were already underway for her 98th birthday celebration on the 21st of November.
