BREAKING: FG Releases N2.3bn for Vasity Lecturers’ Arrears, Promises Sustainable Reforms

The Federal Government has released N2.3 billion to clear salary and promotion arrears of university lecturers, reaffirming its commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.

Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the payment processed through the Office of the Accountant-General represents Batch 8 arrears and demonstrates President Tinubu’s resolve to clear inherited backlogs.

He added that the government is finalising pension and deduction payments and has approved the full inclusion of Earned Academic Allowances in salaries from 2026.

However, several lecturers told reporters that October salaries remain unpaid despite the announcement. ASUU leaders also confirmed ongoing grievances over withheld wages, poor funding, and unimplemented agreements dating back to 2009.

The government maintained that all commitments will be realistic and within budget limits to ensure long-term financial stability.
