Breaking Down Hierarchical Barriers in the Legal Profession

Something interesting happened this week during one of my Court outings.

I sat in the front seat where Senior Advocates sit in court alongside other lawyers since no SAN was in court.

As the court proceedings continued, one SAN came; every lawyer stood up for him to sit. He beckoned on us all to sit with him at the bar and said I could sit beside him. Not too long after, another SAN stepped in; I stood up alongside other lawyers as a sign of respect for them.

He beckoned on me and others to sit down; in fact, he pulled down the seat for me to sit beside him.

At this point, I couldn’t help but notice that these two SANs, despite the silk robe, allowed other lawyers to share the privilege that came with their conferment with others.

It speaks a lot about unity and kindness in the profession and should be encouraged.

These two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) demonstrated exceptional character by:

1. Recognizing the value of inclusivity, allowing others to share the privilege of sitting at the bar.

2. Showing respect and empathy towards fellow lawyers.

3. Breaking down hierarchical barriers, fostering a sense of community.

Their actions speak volumes about their commitment to the profession’s core values.

By inviting me and others to sit alongside them, they:

1. Encouraged camaraderie among lawyers.

2. Demonstrated that prestige and seniority don’t necessitate exclusivity.

3. Set an exemplary standard for younger lawyers.

My key takeaways from this experience are:

Lawyers should treat one another with respect and kindness, regardless of seniority.

Lawyers should recognize the value of inclusivity and diversity in the legal profession.

Lawyers should strive to create a positive, supportive work environment.

Most importantly, we must have it at the back of our minds, that even in a hierarchical profession, kindness, empathy, and unity can thrive.
