At least 20 people have lost their lives following a tragic boat accident that occurred on Saturday evening, February 3, 2026, along a waterway leading to Nguru in Yobe State.
The victims were reportedly traveling from Adiyani town in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Nguru when the boat capsized under circumstances that are yet to be fully explained.
Sources confirmed that the deceased include residents of Adiyani, Ngarbi, and Nguru communities. The bodies of the victims have been deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Nguru.
Local authorities and emergency responders are said to be investigating the cause of the accident, while efforts are ongoing to identify all the victims and notify their families.
The incident has thrown the affected communities into mourning and renewed calls for improved safety measures on inland waterways to prevent similar tragedies.
